MENTOR | COACH | SPEAKER | CONSULTANT
I work with individuals and organisations through keynote speaking, mentoring, coaching and consulting, focusing on resilience, leadership, connection and the modern loneliness epidemic. On stage and beyond, I help people build clarity, confidence and stronger cultures. If you’d like to explore working together, get in touch to start the conversation
I’m Ash Semmens — a former Royal Australian Navy Clearance Diver, keynote speaker, mentor, coach and consultant. After nearly two decades serving in one of the military’s most demanding roles, I went on to successfully fin the English Channel — swimming the entire crossing on my back using fins. It was a world-first endurance achievement that demanded relentless discipline, mental control and resilience in one of the most unforgiving stretches of water in the world. That crossing wasn’t just a physical milestone; it was a deeply personal commitment to growth, service and supporting the veteran community.
My time in the Navy shaped the foundation of who I am. Working in high-pressure, high-risk environments — including operational deployments — taught me about leadership under stress, trust within teams, and the cost of silence when people are struggling. Like many veterans, I also faced the challenge of transitioning back into civilian life and navigating my own battles with PTSD. That experience profoundly shaped the direction of my work today.
Now, I speak to audiences across corporate, community and leadership environments about resilience, connection, leadership and the growing loneliness epidemic. My keynotes are grounded in lived experience — not theory — and focus on practical ways people can strengthen relationships, rebuild self-belief and perform under pressure. Beyond the stage, I work one-on-one as a mentor and coach, and partner with organisations as a consultant to improve culture, communication and wellbeing.
At the heart of everything I do is connection. I believe resilience is built through honesty, accountability and strong relationships — with ourselves and with others. Whether I’m on stage, in a mentoring session or working alongside a leadership team, my goal is simple: to help people move forward with clarity, courage and purpose.
"Former Navy diver Chief Petty Officer Ashley Semmens created history by becoming the first person to swim the English Channel on his back using only fins. He completed the world-first challenge in June, battling strong tides and icy waters to cross the channel in less than 12 hours, raising money to support veterans' mental health."
"An Australian war veteran, Ashley Simmons, is attempting to become the first person to swim the English Channel on his back. Simmons, a former Navy clearance diver and bomb disposal expert, suffered serious back injuries during his service and now aims to raise awareness and funds for the Navy Divers Trust, which supports veterans with mental health challenges."
"Former Navy Clearance Diver Ashley Semmens joins Andrew Johns, Brad Fittler and Billy Slater on this week's edition of Turn It Up."
